Vapoluminescent Behavior and the Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations of Chloroform Solvates of [Au2(μ-1,2-bis(diphenylarsino)ethane)2](AsF6)2

The mono- and di-chloroform solvates of [Au₂(μ-1,2-bis(diphenylarsino)ethane)₂](AsF₆)₂ undergo single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations that result in gain (over 12 hours) or slow loss (over five years) of only one chloroform molecule. The change in solvation results in changes in the structure and luminescence of the digold cation. The cation consists of a pair of slightly bent As-Au-As units that are connected through the two bridging dpae ligands and by aurophilic interactions with Au⋅⋅⋅Au contacts of 3.05152(15) Å in the disolvate or 2.9570(5) Å in the monosolvate.

Optical Spectroscopy as a Method for Skin Cancer Risk Assessment

Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer, and its assessment remains a challenge for physicians. This study reports the application of an optical sensing method, elastic scattering spectroscopy (ESS), coupled with a classifier that was developed with machine learning, to assist in the discrimination of skin lesions that are concerning for malignancy. The method requires no special skin preparation, is non‐invasive, easy to administer with minimal training, and allows rapid lesion classification. This novel approach was tested for all common forms of skin cancer. ESS spectra from a total of 1307 lesions were analyzed in a multi‐center, non‐randomized clinical trial. The classification algorithm was developed on a 950‐lesion training dataset, and its diagnostic performance was evaluated against a 357‐lesion testing dataset that was independent of the training dataset. The observed sensitivity was 100% (14/14) for melanoma and 94% (105/112) for non‐melanoma skin cancer. The overall observed specificity was 36% (84/231). ESS has potential, as an adjunctive assessment tool, to assist physicians to differentiate between common benign and malignant skin lesions.     

Diastereoselective multicomponent Amine-Aldehyde-Dienophile (AAD) process for the synthesis of polysubstituted cyclohex-2-enylamines

The multicomponent Amine-Aldehyde-Dienophile reaction is optimized employing benzyl or 4-methoxybenzylamine. The interest of the transformation consist in the synthesis of polysubstituted cyclohex-2-enylamines. The study of the scope of this AAD process is carried out, as well as the diastereoselective version, employing commercially available chiral benzylic amines and a maleimide with the chiral information at the N-substituent. VCD spectroscopy is a very useful tool for the determination of the absolute configuration of the isolated enantiomerically enriched compounds.     

Synthesis of 3′-fluoro-4′-amino-hexitol nucleosides with a pyrimidine nucleobase as building blocks for oligonucleotides

The synthesis of 3′-fluoro-4′-amino-hexitol nucleosides with a uracil and cytosine nucleobase was performed. The synthesis started from 1,5:2,3-dianhydro-4,6-benzylidene-allitol and afforded the target compounds in 15 steps. These protected hexitol nucleosides are valuable building blocks for the preparation of a new class of oligonucleotides.     

Synthetic studies towards the penicisulfuranols: Synthesis of an advanced spirocyclic diketopiperazine intermediate

The 2,5-diketopiperazine (DKP) moiety is a core feature of many natural products and medicinally relevant scaffolds. As part of our efforts directed towards a total synthesis of penicisulfuranol B, we have developed and report herein: (1) the preparation of an N-hydroxy diketopiperazine intermediate accessible via a molybdenum-mediated oxidation of a parent diketopiperazine, and (2) further synthetic studies leading to a novel spirocyclic dihydrobenzofuran-containing diketopiperazine.
